Time has been flying and so much has been happening. The response to the last story (Microsoft’s bing Delivers a Branding Catastrophe) was overwhelming (over 1,800 hits in a single day!). We have gotten so much great feedback, encouragement and advice that we have decided to get you involved in our re-branding. As we will discuss later, a branding campaign should be adaptive and reactive, so with all this buzz going around why would we stop it?

Drum Roll Please… Vote!

Congratulations you have passed the test, now we want to hear what you think! The three options you have to choose from are Wick, Striking Ideas, and lastly to stay with Bing! Please vote and let us know what you think. Be sure to read our thoughts behind each name detailed below.

Which Name Should We Choose?

Wick
Striking Ideas
Bing!
View Results Only (no vote)

Wick
Wick is great for many reasons. It is a great “brandable” name, meaning it can mean whatever I build into it, and it’s very unique and short. With Wick my brand visuals can stay pretty much the same, making for a low resource transition. Wick uses light in a very similar way and brightens everything around it. It also build a more personal brand as it plays off my name Scott Wickberg, giving it a deeper meaning. For Wick I was able to buy www.wickcreative.com which is a good domain, but not outstanding. Wick also has the downfall of being less about creating great ideas, which is the cornerstone of my brand positioning.

Striking Ideas
Striking Ideas is also great for many reasons. It is a great example of a “discoverable name”, meaning that it very directly describes my branding and services. This allows for it being easy to find on the Internet and very relevant. Another huge plus is that I have gotten www.strikingideas.com so anyone could just type my business name in and I will always come up first, which is a huge bonus. It is also very on brand with communicating our unique attributes within the market. On the down side it has less character and is longer, making it easier to forget.

Bing!
As I have detailed in the previous post, microsoft’s “bing” undermines my brands unique attribute and makes me look like a copy cat brand. My SEO is currently up, but in the long run that will not sustain. Also random hits won’t convert into sales.
On the other side though, Bing! is a great name, and obviously requires no investment in resources. It talks about my unique attributes and connects with customers.

A Branding & Transition Campaign is Adaptive.

We have all known companies who have resisted to grow & adapt to their surroundings and have been left in the dust. It is essential to gauge your next moves on the most up-to-date information and continue to grow with the flow and not against. In this specific case, people are actively interested in the development our situation and we want to continue to foster that interactivity. So we decided to push user interactivity to a real level, let them help us decide. With this approach we can actively gather our audience’s opinion while continuing to grow interest in our brand. Also users will feel invested personally in our brand and will begin to share it with others.

So if you are still reading this and have yet to vote, please do. We value your opinion.

Thanks,

Scott Wickberg & Bing!

The Bad News

As many of you have probably heard Microsoft is set to release their new mega search engine this Wednesday, June 3rd. Much to our dismay they have decided to name their new search engine “bing”. The position of their brand aligns quite closely with ours. Here is an explanation:

“Microsoft’s marketing gurus hope that Bing will evoke neither a type of cherry nor a strip club on “The Sopranos” but rather a sound — the ringing of a bell that signals the “aha” moment when a search leads to an answer. The name is meant to conjure “the sound of found”

It is a nice confirmation that the thinking and branding we developed was spot on.

What This Means for Bing! Ltd.

Well it’s not good. If they succeed and “bing” gets big then we will always look like a copycat brand, as no one will know that we existed previously. We provide distinctive, custom & unique solutions to our clients, so having a brand that is not unique undermines the validity of our brand promise. Curious about the work we produce? Have a look at our Portfolio! If Microsoft’s “bing” fails then we’ll always be associated with another failed Microsoft product.

There was the thought of trying to ride the new interest in “bing” to build and garner more interest in our offering. The problem with that is two fold.

1. Since the word of “bing” has been set free our SEO has sunk and not risen like you would originally think. Our site’s traffic is down 15% in this week alone. This is happening because all the giant sites like New York Times, Wired, and many others are writing stories about “bing”. As those sites have way more street cred, our site is looking less reputable and therefore dropping way back. Update: This post seems to be getting some hot traffic from the actual search engine “bing”, but still seems neglected from google, this should help the re-brand though. Thanks everyone for all the sharing of this article, We really appreciate all the awesome comments also.

2. Clients don’t buy our services on a whim. Over the past couple years of business a trend has developed in that our clients are very in-tune to what they want. Our clients get it, they know good design and understand the value and return on investment it brings, so it would be a poor usage of resources to focus on random passers by.

So what now? Breathe, focus and plan.

The Plan

Time to re-brand & transition! Luckily for us this is what we’re good at, and love to do. We have created transition campaigns in the past for brands such as Chaffin Light, and know what we’re up against. The great thing is that the Internet and social marketing provides us with limitless sources to spread the word. Don’t let us fool you, this is a brand catastrophe, but there is nothing to do now but plan & react.

The Brand Catastrophe Recovery Plan

1. Address the situation and build interest in the transition.
You never want your clients to just wake up and find you with a new name, or more importantly not find you. Start spreading the word early, let people know what to expect and when. This is exactly what I am doing right now. P.S. Our new identity is coming out Tuesday, June 9th.

2. Unveil the new brand identity.
This includes name, logo, and brand positioning statement. Do not release more than this, as you want to continue to build interest and a phased approach gives consumers something to look forward to. An important note is to make sure that the new brand rivals, and hopefully surpasses the quality of the original. This can be difficult when you do not want to re-brand. We understand this, as we are sad to leave the name Bing! It was a smart & effective name, but there are better things to come.

3. Step 3 to be detailed in our next post.
We won’t fully disclose the details our plan right now, we have to keep you coming back of course!

What This Means for You

First
Follow us as we dive into our new name and identity. We will be showcasing it next Tuesday, June 9th. We will have a full write up to how we got to the name and why we chose the one we did.
Next
As always we have grown and been successful due to the support of our friends, family and clients, so keep spreading the word to everyone. Business is better than it has ever been so help us keep rolling.
After That
Social network this post and all our work like crazy! You can use the share button below to post to any and everywhere.
Lastly
Leave us your thoughts below; we’d love to hear what you think.

Thanks,

Have you ever been around people who seem to say that everything is their favorite? Well, we admit that we have the tendency to be those people, but we love this set of work, though the previous set was soo great, and man it’s hard to top that first set.

Project Details

Kimberley G Taylor
Services provided: Identity Materials (logo & stationery package)
Kimberley is providing real estate law and mediation services. The identity that was created shows an interwoven KT with a complimentary font. We chose to interweave the KT to keep consistent with standard law visuals while differentiating her offering to show the connectivity of her services. The logo has both standard and modern elements, which is exactly what Kimberley G Taylor has to offer.

Cheer Action & Center Stage
Services provided: Web Design
Oh the energy! Oh the photoshop! We love this design. There is just not enough energy and excitement on the web, and well this is where it is at. On this design we chose to accentuate the natural rhythm & movement of dance and performance with flowing lines and color. The site is balanced by a clear consistent layout that showcases the content in an easy readable manner.

The Spot – Pathways Youth ministry
Services provided: Logo design
Scott has taught children’s ministry for years now and has been teaching at Pathways in Denver for almost 2 years total. This logo was developed for the youth group and they have been actively involved in the selection. The logo illustrates the spiritual journey they are on in the pathway of their lives. The x marks “the spot”. Read more about the church at their site; Pathways Church.

Project Details

Verizon Wireless
Services provided: Commercial Illustration
I have posted on this project before, (Miss Informed) so now check out the newest installment! The “Detractor” is the second character in the Villains series. He is definitely a no good dude, but you got to love that cape. Why capes aren’t socially acceptable I’ll never know. Thanks again to the Verizon Wireless team, this has been a very fun project.

All Around Recreation
Services provided: Web design & Search Engine Optimization
This is one of those great tasks, creating design for playground equipment. Growing old is not something we are about to start doing and creating an interesting and engaging design for All Around Recreation was right up our alley. The design aims to communicate a sense playfulness and character.

NetQuote
Services provided: Web design for a multi stage load
Have you ever known those people who love to take things apart only to rebuild them better, well that is exactly how we work. Analyzing and deconstructing gets us excited. For NetQuote we worked with them to develop a more streamlined and simplified approach to their site. P.S. NetQuote can get you some great deals on insurance, check it out!

We can only create unique bright ideas for you if you contact us. If you are interested in hearing more about what Bing! Has to offer your business then please call or email us today. We love to talk about work, and we could use a break from staring at this monitor. Call us at 970 333 1628 or email us at info@binglimited.com

Project Details

Guest Research inc.

Services provided: Web Design, trade show display, power point presentation
Guest Research needed a new look developed for their brand and we began by creating a trade show display for them. The main issue with their industry is an overabundance of information and a lack of visual interest and hierarchy. Their new design focuses on creating an effective visual that communicates quickly and intelligently. The Website is still in production, but for more info on Guest Research you can go to their site; Guest Research Inc.

Wambo

Services provided: Web Design
Wambo also has great problems, overflowing work. Business was coming in fast and a website was needed fast. As Wambo is a brandable name (and a great one I might add) it can mean anything. This site design focuses on developing the character and definition of the company. View the work online & in action; Wambo.

Miami Clothing Company

Services provided: Logo
Miami Clothing Company was looking for a solid and unique logo upon which to build their brand. The solution created uses negative space to provide a unique typographic execution and the bright colors to create a lively, youthful approach.

You call that a website!?!

How does your site stack up against the competition? Websites meet your audience at the end of their buying cycle and you can be sure they are looking at your competitor’s sites as well. A strong, well-designed site creates confidence and assurance with your audience, and consumers buy on confidence. We would love to discuss ways we can help you conquer your competition. Call us at 970 333 1628 or email us at info@binglimited.com
The concept behind the logo was to tie into the existing Comcast Spotlight brand while creating something new and unique. The “I” was drawn to mimic a spotlight and tie to the brand. The overall visual created is bold and strong and differentiates itself from the parent brand, while still successfully connecting back to Comcast Spotlight.
I have currently been playing the new Decemberists album non stop, the “Hazards of Love”. I decided to create a background based on some of the thoughts that arose from listening to that album. Please feel free to download the backgrounds below. They come in a variety of sizes so there should be one that works for you. I would love some feedback, and go take a listen to the album and see what you think. As for me I digs.

Update: This background is now being displayed for download on PixelGirl Presents website. It has been added as a “Featured Sexy Desktop” which is really cool. If you haven’t been to their site make sure and check it out, there are tons of great desktops and icons on their site.
For those of you who don’t know Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event that brings more than 3.5 million people from 4,900 communities across the country together each year to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that empowers everyone to help fight cancer by raising money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission. Teams of people camp out at local high schools, parks, or fairgrounds and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relay For Life® symbolizes the hope that people lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face the disease have support, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

Bing! will be participating in the event as well as providing design and materials for the Littleton Relay for Life event again this year. This will be the second year that we have sat on the committee for this event.

So come join us! In some way or another we all have been affected by cancer and it’s time to start fighting back! Come join us at our kick-off event on March 14th at Clement Park from 11am-3pm. We will have free food, games, and much more. It is a great place to sign up for a team or just find out more information.

Thanks again for everyone’s help last year in making this such a great event, now let’s all make this yeah even better! Sign up for a team right now and get started.
