The Bad News
As many of you have probably heard Microsoft is set to release their new mega search engine this Wednesday, June 3rd. Much to our dismay they have decided to name their new search engine “bing”. The position of their brand aligns quite closely with ours. Here is an explanation:
“Microsoft’s marketing gurus hope that Bing will evoke neither a type of cherry nor a strip club on “The Sopranos” but rather a sound — the ringing of a bell that signals the “aha” moment when a search leads to an answer. The name is meant to conjure “the sound of found”
It is a nice confirmation that the thinking and branding we developed was spot on.
What This Means for Bing! Ltd.
Well it’s not good. If they succeed and “bing” gets big then we will always look like a copycat brand, as no one will know that we existed previously. We provide distinctive, custom & unique solutions to our clients, so having a brand that is not unique undermines the validity of our brand promise. Curious about the work we produce? Have a look at our Portfolio! If Microsoft’s “bing” fails then we’ll always be associated with another failed Microsoft product.
There was the thought of trying to ride the new interest in “bing” to build and garner more interest in our offering. The problem with that is two fold.
1. Since the word of “bing” has been set free our SEO has sunk and not risen like you would originally think. Our site’s traffic is down 15% in this week alone. This is happening because all the giant sites like New York Times, Wired, and many others are writing stories about “bing”. As those sites have way more street cred, our site is looking less reputable and therefore dropping way back. Update: This post seems to be getting some hot traffic from the actual search engine “bing”, but still seems neglected from google, this should help the re-brand though. Thanks everyone for all the sharing of this article, We really appreciate all the awesome comments also.
2. Clients don’t buy our services on a whim. Over the past couple years of business a trend has developed in that our clients are very in-tune to what they want. Our clients get it, they know good design and understand the value and return on investment it brings, so it would be a poor usage of resources to focus on random passers by.
So what now? Breathe, focus and plan.
The Plan
Time to re-brand & transition! Luckily for us this is what we’re good at, and love to do. We have created transition campaigns in the past for brands such as Chaffin Light, and know what we’re up against. The great thing is that the Internet and social marketing provides us with limitless sources to spread the word. Don’t let us fool you, this is a brand catastrophe, but there is nothing to do now but plan & react.
The Brand Catastrophe Recovery Plan
1. Address the situation and build interest in the transition.
You never want your clients to just wake up and find you with a new name, or more importantly not find you. Start spreading the word early, let people know what to expect and when. This is exactly what I am doing right now. P.S. Our new identity is coming out Tuesday, June 9th.
2. Unveil the new brand identity.
This includes name, logo, and brand positioning statement. Do not release more than this, as you want to continue to build interest and a phased approach gives consumers something to look forward to. An important note is to make sure that the new brand rivals, and hopefully surpasses the quality of the original. This can be difficult when you do not want to re-brand. We understand this, as we are sad to leave the name Bing! It was a smart & effective name, but there are better things to come.
3. Step 3 to be detailed in our next post.
We won’t fully disclose the details our plan right now, we have to keep you coming back of course!
What This Means for You
First
Follow us as we dive into our new name and identity. We will be showcasing it next Tuesday, June 9th. We will have a full write up to how we got to the name and why we chose the one we did.
Next
As always we have grown and been successful due to the support of our friends, family and clients, so keep spreading the word to everyone. Business is better than it has ever been so help us keep rolling.
After That
Social network this post and all our work like crazy! You can use the share button below to post to any and everywhere.
Lastly
Leave us your thoughts below; we’d love to hear what you think.
Thanks,
Scott Wickberg & Bing!

Wow, that’s rough but it’s a great plan you’ve put together, and very quickly too. Good luck and I hope this great post gets you some solid traffic and launches you on the path to a bigger and better brand!

Thanks Michael, I appreciate the feedback. It is definitely a situation you never expect to be in, and not a fun one, but i figure it can also be a testament to the power of branding. Thanks again.

Crazy, I was hoping this might bump the search results, but I didn’t expect #4. Well I need to spread the word, so I am glad it’s getting out there. Thanks for commenting.

Scott,
You know you are really-really good at what you do when the “big guys” come up with a name that you have been using for years…this will pass, and something wonderful will come out of it….
Let me know if there is anything that I can do. Teresa

I found your site by searching the new Mirosoft Bing Search Engine. The first thing I read on your site is how distressing this is to you. I believe you would be better served if you wrote an encuraging note about how great your services are. And don’t worry I am sure Microsoft will change the name to something else in a year or so.

I do not understand, Why do have to rebrand.
I thought that you would have the rights to the name, by first in Business use.
You can also block MS from TMing bing.
AM I wrong, I know it would be legally expensive. At the very least you should them buy you out from using the term.

We are meeting more with our lawyers to see about the possibilities we have. We were originally advised that we had no case, but we have been getting many different opinions now. But yes it will be costly.

Bing search is just great, I have tried it and if you search you immediately get the facts, so not the the same things of Google, with Google you just get something that’s in their database.

I will have to say that as much as I wish they didn’t call is bing, i really like the search engine as well. I feel it breaks through some of the SEO barriers that google has created. The results seem to be much more variable and constantly changing. Of course I am just saying that because this post is on page 1, but still that would have never happened on google, that’s for sure.

Dudes,
Do you have a Squidoo page, a Wetpaint page, a BING HUB page? Have you sent articles about your bussiness to Ezine Articles or any other article directories? What about posting video to You-Tube about what you do? Come on, get with the Social scene to promote yourselves and create distinction from you and this new search engine. Once you get all these properties up make sure to link them together, and don’t forget to Blog your case!

In spanish there is a word called Bingo, which is a game used to be played in some Catholic meetings to collect money for good works. When one win, shouts BINGO!!
It is also played in social meetings without money collection.

I didn’t even search about your company. I was just curious about the 4th overal on the search page which talks about (BING)branding catastrophe. I definitely got my attention. I thought it’s about Microsoft’s BING but I guess it’s another sound
Adding adsense? That sounds interesting. I might be binging other ad results too
Am hungry for info.

I would have taken a rather different approach. See, now that you have already announced your decision to re-brand, you have, for all intensive purposes, forfeited your case to fight Microsoft.
Also, the mere fact that Microsoft decided to name their new search engine BING should not have automatically pushed you to a re-brand. In fact, people will be searching for “bing” A LOT, and will generate tons of traffic.
Anyway, if you are truly interested in fighting Microsoft, consider retracting your move to re-brand until you reach an outcome…and maybe even a little cash for it.
Cheers and Good Luck!

You should change to bong. Bong is a much stronger sound as if from a larger bell or a gong. Plus it conjures the instrument used to enjoy a nice relaxing high.

These are all really good thoughts, to be honest we are really just working 80 hour weeks to keep up with the workload as it is. But any and all gaps in work will be filled with more social networking. Thanks again for the great thoughts.

Interesting info and a great case study on how search can so quickly change the rules for a business.
Would be interested to see approximately (very approximately) how much revenue your little ad block generates in a short time span…

Well the good news is that I just read all of that because when I went to Bing.com and typed in what is Bing?…this is what I pulled up. So in this instance, your rivals brought you some traffic. Now of course I have to come back on the 9th to find out the new name and how you came to it. Good luck Underdogs!

You are right about keeping people coming back by not unveiling too much information. I am definitely going to come back to the blog to see what you have decided on about your ‘new identity’. You mentioned on June 1st that hits had increased considerably. It should be interesting to see how many hits you have on the 9th when you introduce the re-brand!
As a business major, I find it interesting to note your situation, no matter how difficult it may be. It is always a good approach to stay positive and generate new innovative ideas. You can never go wrong with that!
Also, I was very impressed with the portfolio!
Good luck!

heh love the circa 2006 SEO tips from Valerie on beating out Microsoft’s Bing result via link building… I’m sure that’ll work out really well.
good luck with the company name change and from the looks of the portfolios, you should have no trouble securing new clients and keeping old ones.

Hello – I’m writing from another Bing Design, headquartered in Yellow Springs, Ohio (I work remotely from a home office in Colorado Springs, though).
Just curious if you have had any strange phone calls or emails with feedback on the bing.com site? We’re staying good humored over here, but unfortunately we’re the #1 search result for “contact Bing” – and users have a lot of product modification requests.
Best of luck!
